Ice Dam: Meaning, Origin & Winter Safety Guide
Quick Definition (Home, Driving & Survival Rules)
A thick ridge of solid ice that builds along the cold lower eaves of a sloped roof, trapping melting snow water behind it and forcing leaks backward under the shingles into ceilings and walls.
Also called: roof ice dam, ice dams, eave ice ridge
If you only do three things
- Pull snow off the lower 3–4 feet of your roof from the ground using a telescoping roof rake.
- Never chip roof ice with hammers or axes, and never throw rock salt onto roof shingles.
- Seal attic air leaks and add attic floor insulation before next winter to stop roof heat loss.
Origin, meteorology & what "Ice Dam" means
Ice dams form when indoor heat escapes into a poorly insulated attic and warms the upper roof deck above 32°F (0°C). Snow melts on the warm upper roof, trickles down under the snowpack, and refreezes the moment it reaches the unheated overhang (eave) where cold outdoor air circulates underneath.
Giant icicles hanging from gutters are the classic warning sign that an ice dam is forming above them.
Real-world winter safety & what to do
NEVER climb onto an icy roof or chip at an ice dam with a hammer, axe, or shovel — you will puncture the shingles and risk a fatal fall.
Instead, use a telescoping long-handled foam roof rake while standing safely on the ground to pull the bottom 3 to 4 feet of snow off the eaves, or lay calcium chloride filled nylon stockings vertically across the ice dam to melt drainage channels.
Frequently asked questions about Ice Dam
Do big icicles mean my roof has an ice dam?
Usually yes. While small icicles can form during sunny thaws, rows of heavy icicles during below-freezing weather indicate attic heat is melting roof snow.
Why shouldn't I use rock salt on a roof ice dam?
Sodium chloride (rock salt) corrodes metal gutters, nails, and flashing, stains siding, and kills foundation shrubs below the downspout. Use calcium chloride inside a nylon stocking if emergency melting is needed.
Helpful winter preparedness gear
Clears eaves from the ground to prevent ice dams without damaging shingles.
